About

Design Philosophy

With over two decades of dedicated experience in residential design, I, Ryan Singer, offer a deeply personal approach to crafting custom, single-family residences. My passion for creating timeless, contemporary designs is nurtured by my roots in Laguna Beach, California, where I was born and raised. Each project is a personal endeavor, where meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to quality are paramount.

Unlike larger firms where clients might navigate layers of bureaucracy, working with me means you’ll receive the undivided attention only a passionate individual architect can provide. My competitive pricing structure, typically ranging from 9% to 10% of the construction cost, underscores my commitment to making great design accessible.

Background

I proudly carry on the legacy of architectural excellence that my father, Mark Singer, a prominent architect and multiple AIA award winner from Laguna Beach, instilled in me. Our lifelong discussions about design have profoundly influenced my work, shaping a philosophy I continue to develop in my own practice. A graduate of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, with additional urban planning studies in the Czech Republic, I blend influences from graphic design and user interface to enhance design functionality and beauty.

Personal Approach

“Living spaces should nurture and enhance who you are. I strive for simplicity and tranquility in my designs, reducing life’s complexities to foster well-being and health. By prioritizing vistas, simplifying experiences, and focusing on essential architecture, I create spaces that not only serve as a backdrop for living but enhance it.”

Building a Sustainable Future

As a solo practitioner at Ryan Singer Design, I am deeply committed to sustainability and ecological responsibility. This commitment extends beyond design; it's about making a positive impact with each project. For every tree used in my constructions, I ensure five more are planted, aiming to leave our planet better than we found it.

I've personally planted over 1,000 trees, thanks to the support from clients who share my vision for a greener future. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to foster a sustainable environment through thoughtful architecture and active participation in global reforestation efforts, in partnership with organizations like One Tree Planted.

Plant 5 trees for each tree used

On average, it takes approximately 40 trees to build a typical 2,000 square foot home. At Ryan Singer Design, we're committed to balancing what we use in our projects. For every tree used, we plant five more, ensuring a positive impact on our environment.

Our efforts extend globally, supporting initiatives like the Monarch butterflies in Mexico. Together, we can create a brighter, greener tomorrow.

1000 trees planted … and counting

I've planted 1,022 trees to date, all thanks to your support and my commitment. These trees, equivalent to 50,000 square feet of construction saved, are funded by my fees. Some clients also choose to match my donation, not only contributing to a greener world but also potentially benefiting from tax deductions for their generous contributions.

He is very down to earth and wonderful to work with.

If I have an opportunity to build another house, I would ask him to be the architect and interior design. “

  • “My husband and I feel very lucky to own a Mark Singer designed home in Laguna Beach, California.

Our home was built in 1990 and we purchased it in 2004. In 2006, we contacted Mark Singer's office as we were interested in doing some exterior renovations. Mark referred us to his son, Ryan, who also is a designer.

We contacted Ryan in 2006 and have been happy to know him for 10 years now! Ryan has been wonderful to work with. We started the design process with him in 2006. Ryan is thoughtful and never rushes the design process. He provided us with excellent design ideas and was open to our suggestions and ideas as well. We always appreciated that about working with Ryan. He provided us with computer renderings as we explored various ideas.

In 2008, we had to put our project on hold for several years due to a challenging economy and some family situations. We found Ryan to be patient and understanding thru all of that.

We re-engaged Ryan in 2012 to resume the design process on our exterior renovations. Some of our project ideas has changed in those years, and Ryan was always there to suggest appropriate modifications to the design and materials.

Ryan was awesome at being there for us every step of the way in getting the design review approval in Laguna Beach--from creating the plans to contacting the listing service letter to organizing the neighborhood meeting to attending the design review hearing. He was great!

We were so delighted when we received approval on the project in January 2014!! We had a newborn baby at the time and were not ready to begin construction.

We re-engaged Ryan at the end of 2015 as we needed to get an extension on our design review approval. Ryan was there for us again like he always had been. We received the extension and then Ryan created the structural plans for the project in early 2016. We were again very happy when he worked with us thru that process, and those plans were approved in May.

Construction began in June 2016, and Ryan has visited the site several times to provide more design input, answer questions of the general contractor, and provide more plans as needed in the process.

Ryan is a very talented designer. He is patient, responsive and open to his clients' ideas and wishes. Ryan has impressive experience in all aspects of the process--from the design to submittal to approval process. And he will be there for you during construction... Invaluable! We can't wait to add photos of the finished project!

Thank you, Ryan, for your hard work and 10 years of collaboration!!”
