VISION
We believe in truly custom design. A client may come to us with a very specfic set of requirements and yet they still require a vision. We derive this vision by paying special attention to the client’s unstated needs. In many ways this is an intuitive approach, and it involves intense coordination with the client. The result is a tailored space that provides a uniquely comfortable environment.
In residences, we attempt to remove excess complexity from the space because our ideal home is a calming place. People live hectic lives and our homes should be enclaves where we can escape the daily race and be at peace with our true selves. In public spaces, there must be durability and value commenserate with the amount and type of use. The details are very important. We prefer natural circulation cues for navigation rather than reliance on disconnected signage. Defining the character of a space is a complex process in which the legibility of design is very important.
In all designs, the site provides a paramount context from which to begin. We study foreground and background vernacular, sun and wind patterns, social conditions, and more to discover a design that truly fits into its context.
RYAN SINGER’S BIO
I was born and raised in Laguna Beach, California looking at the horizon. It has affected my subconscious and eye for aesthetics. I studied architecture at Calpoly, San Luis Obispo, graduating with a Bachelors degree in Architecture. It was there that I grew fond of graphic design, attending lectures, etc.. During my senior thesis I worked as a graphic designer for a print shop, worked as an artist in a software company, designed an exhibition space called “Slick like vinyl”, was selected for representation in a nationwide competition (placing 2nd), and somehow ended up on the dean’s list. On graduating I flew to New York where I worked for SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill) on many projects of varying scale. In 2000 I moved back to california and worked for Lorcan O’herlihy Architects briefly before opening up my own design studio in july 2001. Since then, I’ve had some great experiences working on various custom residential projects in locations such as southern & northern california, montana & central america. I’ve been designing and coding my own web sites from almost the very beginning and continue to evolve in this passion. Branding is another strength as I’ve been there for many companies during inception. This comes naturally being excited about design and studying laws of aesthetics during all of my travels across the waters that connect us all.

[ DEFINE ]
The definition of the problem is the first step in realizing a solution. This process involves brainstorming with the client, defining a project’s scope and budget, site visits and analysis, and concludes with a program.
[ CONCEPT ]
A program becomes the basis for a conceptual design that translates all of the client’s needs into a theoretical environment. The concept is presented in drawings, sketches, and physical or 3D models for discussion with the client before refinement.
[ REFINE ]
With the concept complete, the next phase is to refine the design to address various criteria including: code requirements, engineering, material finishes, building details, and special requests by the client.
[ DOCUMENT ]
Once the client approves the refined design, a complete set of drawings is created in collaboration with the engineering consultants that reflects every aspect of the design. These code-compliant construction documents will be used in obtaining permits from the City and bids from contractors, as well as serve as instructions during construction.
[ ADMINISTRATE ]
While construction ensues, we remain advocates for the client, resolving any unforeseen issues, and ensuring that the design intent is retained throughout.

We all…
A BOX
this is an interesting reflection I wrote back in february 2011 when the lightest of riots broke out in Egypt.
A phone is no longer just a phone. We carry amazing communication devices allowing to capture sounds, images, movies, locations, and they also feed us information we request. The fact that you can bypass computers and go live onto the Internet with content is quite amazing. This puts the power in your hands. You are all journalists, recorders of life’s events. Looking at the events unfold in Egypt, you can see exactly the magnitude at which the power can be in the peoples control. Each person can express them self by capturing life and sharing via a blog or social media. If you don’t have one, arm yourself with a phone; it’s the new pen and much mightier than a sword!
I still feel the same, but have also come to realize that smart phones make some people dumb as they waste most of their time in the non real world, misplacing true social opportunities for social media non-interconnectedness. Nonetheless, phones and social media are still valid for sharing events, opportunities, ideas and feelings as humans. If only there can be a way to cut down the noise within a social media site so that messages are taken to heart instead of a cacophony of realtime feeds thrown in your face. Till then I’m on Facebook hiatus…
Greetings and Thank you! I’m not sure exactly which post you’re talking about but I don’t have any projects in Ghent, but I wouldn’t mind working there. I’m glad you’re inspired by architecture. It’s a great field and very passionate. I know you can only do it if you truly love it!
